Ski touring is accessible to far more people than you might imagine. You don’t need to be a top-level athlete; the key is simply choosing a route suited to your fitness, skiing ability, and mountain experience. With an experienced instructor by your side, you learn to pace yourself on the ascent while fully enjoying the thrill of the descent.
A wide range of majestic routes
There are numerous options around Morzine, with routes catering to various skill levels. For a first-time experience, the Col du Ratti, with a vertical gain of 500m, offers a manageable route and an accessible descent. More seasoned skiers might opt for the Tête de Bostan; rising to around 2,500m, it features a vertical gain of up to 1,200m and includes more technical sections.
Col du Ratti – 500 m elevation gain
An excellent option for discovering ski touring. Its south-facing slope offers steady, relatively easy gradients, generally with good snow cover right from the start of the season. The outing is available as a half-day trip from the Col de l’Encrenaz, or as a full-day trip from Morzine via Les Gets.
Col de Cou – 800 m elevation gain
This day hike combines physical exertion, the discovery of mountain heritage, and sweeping panoramic views. The route follows, among other paths, an old smugglers’ trail between Savoy and Switzerland. Upon arrival, the views of the Dent du Midi and the Dents Blanches offer a magnificent reward after the ascent.
Tête de Bostan – 1,200 m elevation gain
Designed for skiers with solid experience in mountain ski touring, this day trip reaches an altitude of around 2,500 meters.
A more technical final section
The route requires particular attention during the final section, especially when conditions are challenging. The descent then offers great slopes and varied terrain for experienced skiers.
An outing suited to the conditions
Preparing for a ski touring outing involves more than just choosing a route. Factors such as the weather, snow quality, the group’s skill level, and terrain conditions are all taken into account both before and during the trip. Consequently, each route offers options for adjustment or alternative plans, prioritizing responsible mountain practice.
